Atletico Madrid Tottenham Champions League clash ends 5-2 as Spurs’ costly errors hand the Spanish side a strong first-leg advantage

Atlético Madrid punished a series of costly mistakes by Tottenham Hotspur to secure a commanding 5–2 victory in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie on Tuesday at the Metropolitano Stadium.

The Spanish side raced into a stunning 4–0 lead within 22 minutes, capitalising on three glaring defensive errors, including two by Tottenham goalkeeper Antonín Kinský.

Julián Álvarez scored twice for the hosts, while Marcos Llorente, Antoine Griezmann and Robin Le Normand also found the net in a ruthless display in the Spanish capital.

Tottenham responded through Pedro Porro and Dominic Solanke to reduce the deficit and keep a faint hope alive ahead of the second leg.

Atletico struck first after six minutes when Ademola Lookman capitalised on a slip by Kinsky and fed Álvarez, who squared the ball for Llorente to finish.

The visitors’ troubles quickly deepened. Defender Micky van de Ven lost his footing moments later, allowing Griezmann to race through on goal and double Atletico’s lead.

Another mistake by Kinsky soon followed. The goalkeeper miskicked a pass, leaving Álvarez with a simple opportunity to score into an empty net.

Tottenham interim coach Igor Tudor reacted swiftly by replacing Kinsky with Guglielmo Vicario after just 17 minutes, with Atletico supporters applauding the distraught goalkeeper as he left the pitch.

However, the damage was already severe. Vicario saved a header that was heading into his own net, but Le Normand converted the rebound to make it four.

Porro briefly lifted Spurs’ spirits after combining with Richarlison to score midway through the first half.

Atletico restored their dominance shortly after the break. Álvarez completed his brace when Griezmann released him on the counterattack following a strong save by Jan Oblak.

Tottenham reduced the deficit again when Oblak misjudged a pass and Porro intercepted, allowing substitute Solanke to fire home.

Despite a more composed second-half performance, Spurs could not mount a comeback as the hosts maintained control to secure a dominant first-leg advantage.

The defeat marked Tottenham’s sixth consecutive loss in all competitions and continued a difficult spell since Tudor replaced Thomas Frank in February.

Atletico, guided by coach Diego Simeone, will now head into the second leg with a strong cushion as they pursue their long-awaited first Champions League title.
