Otukpo rainstorm damage leaves homes destroyed and businesses paralysed as monarch urges NEMA and Benue Government to provide urgent relief

The Och’Idoma, His Royal Majesty Agabaidu Elaigwu Odogbo Obagaji John, has appealed for urgent government intervention following widespread Otukpo rainstorm damage that left several homes destroyed and business activities paralysed in the historic Benue State town.

Residents of Otukpo were thrown into distress after a heavy rainstorm triggered flooding that damaged houses, shops and other properties, forcing some families to abandon their homes.

In a statement issued on Sunday on behalf of the paramount ruler, the Mayor of Otukpo, Chief Ignatius Ogbogo, called on the Federal Government and the Benue State Government to provide immediate assistance through the National Emergency Management Agency.

Ogbogo urged authorities to supply emergency relief materials, including food items, blankets and temporary shelter materials, for families displaced by the disaster.

He also appealed for the expansion and rehabilitation of drainage systems within the town to prevent future flooding and reduce the risk of similar destruction.

“What we had all welcomed as the first rain of the year, a sign of relief from the intense heat and the beginning of a new planting season, has unfortunately brought unexpected hardship to many households within our community,” the statement said.

“Several homes have been damaged, businesses disrupted and properties built through years of dedication and hard work destroyed by the flooding. Sadly, many of our neighbours have been left without shelter as a result of this disaster.”

The traditional ruler expressed sympathy for affected residents and assured them that the traditional institution would support efforts aimed at ensuring relief and recovery.

“To those who have lost their homes, businesses or sense of security, please know that we stand with you in this difficult moment. No one should have to watch their livelihood swept away in a single evening,” the statement added.

The Och’Idoma also called for the establishment of a special intervention fund to assist affected traders and homeowners in rebuilding their businesses and livelihoods.

As part of precautionary measures, residents were advised to clear blocked gutters and drainage channels around their homes and business premises to allow the free flow of water.

The royal father also warned residents against seeking shelter under weak structures or large trees during storms and urged those severely affected to report their situations to the Local Government Secretariat so that assistance can be properly coordinated.

“Otukpo has always been known for its resilience and unity. We have faced challenges before, and by standing together and supporting one another, we will rebuild our community stronger and better,” the statement concluded.
