Lagos flood warning 2026 issued as government alerts residents to heavy rainfall, flash floods and strong winds based on NiMet seasonal forecast

The Lagos State Government has warned residents to prepare for possible flooding and heavy rainfall as the Lagos Flood Warning 2026 signals an early and prolonged rainy season across the state.

The alert was issued on Friday by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, while presenting the state’s climate outlook based on seasonal forecasts released by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency.

Wahab said the forecast indicates that Lagos will likely experience an early onset of rainfall, a longer rainy season and above-normal precipitation levels in several parts of the state.

“This also implies an early onset of the rainy season, a longer-than-normal length and a delayed end of the rainy season in Lagos,” Wahab said.

According to the commissioner, the projected rainfall levels could trigger flash floods in vulnerable communities and disrupt economic and social activities.

“Lagos State is expected to experience above normal rainfall,” Wahab said.

“It is also expected that the high amounts of rainfall sometimes would lead to flooding events in parts of the state.”

The commissioner warned that strong winds are also expected during the early and late phases of the rainy season, posing potential risks to lives and property.

“Because strong winds are expected during the onset and the end of each rainy season, lives and properties may be at risk,” Wahab said.

He added that severe weather conditions could lead to disruptions in commercial activities, flight delays and possible revenue losses for businesses.

Despite the forecast, Wahab said the state government has intensified preparations to mitigate the impact of the expected downpours.

Measures already in place include expanded drainage maintenance, improved flood monitoring systems and strengthened emergency response operations across the state.

Officials urged residents, particularly those living in flood-prone areas, to remain vigilant and cooperate with environmental authorities as the rainy season approaches.
