Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, said comments he made last Sunday during a project inspection were misinterpreted.

He clarified that engagements with relevant stakeholders were still ongoing and that logistical constraints had delayed the planned sensitisation programme.

“The truth is, we were meant to start with a sensitisation programme last week, but we had a logistics issue. We need to find a day that is acceptable to all stakeholders,” Wahab said.

The commissioner expressed optimism that the exercise could return soon and assured residents that the official commencement date would be announced by Governor Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu. He urged the public to continue their lawful activities without hindrance in the meantime.

The monthly sanitation exercise, previously held on the last Saturday of each month between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., was suspended in November 2016 following a legal ruling limiting movement during the programme.

Recent waste management challenges, including clogged drainage channels and indiscriminate refuse disposal, have intensified calls from residents for the exercise’s reinstatement.
