Lagos inaugurates Ikorodu testing centre, enhancing building safety, compliance, and access to construction materials analysis for residents and developers

Efforts to improve construction quality control in Lagos State received a significant boost on Thursday with the inauguration of a new sample collection centre in Ikorodu by the Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory Agency (LSMTL).

The facility, located within the LASTMA Yard along Shagamu Road, is aimed at bringing essential construction materials testing services closer to residents, contractors, and property developers in the Lagos East Senatorial District.

Plans are underway to establish additional centres in Amuwo-Odofin and Lekki as part of a broader decentralisation strategy.

The centre addresses logistical challenges previously faced by clients who had to travel to LSMTL’s headquarters in Ojodu-Berger to submit samples.

By creating a local access point, the government seeks to streamline processes, encourage compliance with mandatory testing, and enhance safety standards across the state.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, LSMTL General Manager, Olayinka Abdul, described the initiative as a strategic step in bridging the gap between the agency and the communities it serves.

“Residents and developers in Ikorodu, Agbowa, Ikorodu North and even Epe will no longer need to undertake long journeys to access testing services,” she said.

Abdul explained that all samples collected at the centre would be transported daily to the main laboratory in Ojodu-Berger for analysis, with results transmitted electronically to clients to ensure efficiency and transparency.

Plans are already in motion to replicate the model across other parts of Lagos, ensuring coverage from the Mainland to the Island.

Highlighting the technical importance of the centre, Head of the Soil and Geotechnics Unit, Abimbola Adebayo, emphasised that proper site investigation is a critical safeguard against structural failure.

“Many building collapses can be traced to inadequate soil assessment. Determining bearing capacity, compaction levels and soil composition is fundamental before any construction begins,” he warned.

With the Ikorodu centre now operational, LSMTL expressed optimism that easier access to testing services would promote regulatory compliance, improve construction standards, and ultimately safeguard lives and property across Lagos State.
