EU Nigeria cooperation expands as Tinubu and Kaja Kallas discuss trade, security, and critical raw materials amid global tensions

The European Union and Nigeria have agreed to deepen cooperation in key sectors including trade, investment, critical raw materials and cybersecurity, following high-level talks between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.

The meeting, held at President Tinubu’s Lagos residence on Monday, comes amid rising global security concerns and intensifying competition for strategic resources.

Speaking after the discussions, Kallas described Nigeria as a like-minded partner, stressing the urgency of stronger collaboration in the face of what she termed a “very serious” global security environment.

“We are very like-minded partners, the European Union and Nigeria. And today we explored new ways to collaborate,” she said, highlighting the importance of alliances that support a rules-based international system.

The EU Nigeria cooperation discussions centred on expanding trade and investment flows, as well as securing access to critical raw materials essential for modern technologies and renewable energy systems.

Kallas said both sides also explored opportunities to strengthen ties in security and cybersecurity, reflecting shared concerns over global instability and digital threats.

The visit marks a significant step in the EU’s broader strategy to diversify supply chains for minerals such as lithium, cobalt and rare earth elements, resources in which Nigeria holds considerable potential.

President Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening relations with the EU and expressed appreciation for the bloc’s continued support.

Senior Nigerian officials present at the meeting included the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu.

Analysts say the engagement reflects a growing alignment between Nigeria and the EU, particularly as both sides seek to navigate shifting geopolitical dynamics and economic priorities.
