UEFA fines Benfica €40,000 and orders partial stadium closure in response to racism scandal during Champions League clash with Real Madrid

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has imposed sanctions on Sport Lisboa e Benfica following racist incidents during the club’s recent UEFA Champions League playoff clash against Real Madrid. Benfica has been fined €40,000, with a partial stadium closure also suspended as part of the ruling.

The disciplinary panel found that Benfica supporters directed racist behaviour towards Real Madrid players, including allegations made by forward Vinicius Junior against Gianluca Prestianni.

UEFA additionally fined Benfica €8,000 for the use of laser pointers and €25,000 for throwing objects during the match.

Assistant coach Machado received a one-match suspension in response to the club’s conduct, marking the first official sanction against team staff.

UEFA emphasised that the measures aim to reinforce the organisation’s zero-tolerance stance on discriminatory behaviour in European competitions.

Benfica issued a statement accepting the sanctions, committing to further educational initiatives and fan engagement programmes to combat racism in football.

The ruling comes amid growing scrutiny over fan behaviour in European leagues, where authorities are seeking stronger accountability measures.
