Nasarawa violent clash in Karu LGA leaves at least three dead after a farmland dispute escalates into a deadly confrontation and reprisal attack

A Nasarawa violent clash has left at least three people dead following a deadly confrontation that escalated from a farmland dispute into a broader reprisal attack in Unguwan Yobe community.

The Nasarawa State Police Command, through its Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, confirmed the incident and provided details of how the situation unfolded after tensions arose between herders and a vigilante member over alleged encroachment on farmland.

According to reports, the crisis began on March 25, 2026, when a 17-year-old herder, Ado Yau, was allegedly shot by Sunday Adoye, a 40-year-old vigilante member.

The confrontation reportedly started when herders entered farmland belonging to Adoye and were cutting leaves from mango trees to feed their cattle, leading to a dispute that quickly escalated.

Following the initial altercation, Adoye is said to have left the scene, returned with a pump-action gun, and fired at the teenager, who died instantly.

The killing sparked immediate outrage among the herders, who mobilised and launched a reprisal attack on the Unguwan Yobe community.

The ensuing violence resulted in multiple casualties and widespread destruction of property.

At least four people sustained injuries, while four houses, two vehicles, and three motorcycles were set ablaze during the unrest, further intensifying the crisis in the area.

SP Nansel confirmed that two additional individuals, Muhammadu Ibrahim, 25, and Ado Gambo, 18, lost their lives during intervention efforts by military personnel deployed to restore order.

Their deaths brought the total number of fatalities to at least three.

Security operatives were swiftly deployed to the scene, where both the deceased and injured victims were evacuated to Mararaba Medical Centre for medical attention and further examination.

Authorities also moved to stabilise the area amid fears of further escalation.

The police have arrested the prime suspect, Sunday Adoye, and recovered the firearm allegedly used in the shooting.

Additionally, 15 other male suspects have been taken into custody in connection with the violence as investigations continue.

Security presence in Unguwan Yobe and surrounding communities has since been reinforced, with intensified patrols and surveillance operations under the Karu Area Command aimed at preventing further clashes and restoring lasting peace.

The incident highlights ongoing tensions in parts of Nasarawa State where disputes over land use continue to trigger violent confrontations, underscoring the need for improved conflict resolution mechanisms and community engagement.
