Former Chelsea midfielder Ruud Gullit has highlighted what he believes is a major structural issue at the club ahead of their Premier League fixture against Brighton on Tuesday night, warning that the squad lacks experienced leadership in key moments.

Ruud Gullit highlights Chelsea’s key issue assessment comes after Chelsea slipped to sixth place in the Premier League following a 1–0 defeat to Manchester United at the weekend, a result that has increased pressure on their push for Champions League qualification.

Chelsea now face a critical run-in, with five league matches remaining, and must secure strong results to avoid missing out on European football’s elite competition next season.

Speaking to Daily Mail Sport, Ruud Gullit argued that Chelsea’s current squad is heavily reliant on youth, which he believes has led to inconsistency and repeated mistakes during matches.

The Dutchman said the team lacks experienced figures capable of guiding younger players through difficult phases of games, suggesting this imbalance is a key factor behind their struggles.

“I understand that Chelsea wants to win, but they have only young players there,” Ruud Gullit said. “You need some veterans to teach these young players in training what they have to do. They keep making the same mistakes all the time.”

He further criticised the team’s approach in matches, describing their style as rushed and lacking control in key moments.

“They are too frantic, too hasty with everything. You need to change your tempo and everything,” he added.

“Like a Luka Modrić, a Toni Kroos, they teach you how to moderate the game. They don’t have that.”

Chelsea’s youthful rebuild has been a defining feature of recent seasons, but Gullit’s comments add to growing debate over whether the club needs experienced leaders to complement its emerging talent.
