Neymar has been recalled to Brazil’s World Cup squad by Carlo Ancelotti after a near three-year absence due to injury and form issues

Brazilian superstar Neymar has made a dramatic return to the national team after being named in Brazil’s 26-man squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, marking his first international call-up in nearly three years.

The inclusion of Neymar, Brazil’s all-time leading scorer, came as the biggest surprise in the squad unveiled by new head coach Carlo Ancelotti during a ceremony in Rio de Janeiro on Monday, where the announcement was met with loud cheers.

Neymar, who has scored 79 goals in 128 appearances for Brazil, last featured for the national team in 2023 before a serious knee injury sustained during a World Cup qualifier against Uruguay halted his international career.

A combination of injury setbacks and inconsistent form had kept the 34-year-old out of Brazil’s recent squads, including the March international friendlies against France and Croatia.

However, his return to boyhood club Santos in January appears to have helped revive his international prospects, with Ancelotti now opting to reintegrate the experienced forward into his plans.

Brazil, who are chasing a record-extending sixth World Cup title, will open their campaign against Morocco on June 13 before facing Haiti and Scotland in Group C.

The squad also features a blend of experienced stars and emerging talents across Europe and South America as Brazil aim to end their long wait for World Cup glory.
