Abia APC alleges a N5bn plot by the state government to destabilise the party ahead of the 2027 general elections

The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has alleged that the Abia State Government is sponsoring efforts to destabilise the party through some former aspirants, claiming that billions of naira have been earmarked to create divisions ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The allegations were contained in a statement issued by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Uche Aguoru, who said the Abia APC had uncovered what it described as desperate attempts by the ruling Labour Party administration to manufacture an internal crisis within the opposition party.

According to Aguoru, intelligence available to the party suggests that a businessman and former APC member who is allegedly close to Governor Alex Otti was used as a conduit to channel funds aimed at destabilising the party.

The Abia APC claimed that N5 billion was allegedly released to certain individuals at the party’s national headquarters as part of the plan.

The party further alleged that a portion of the funds was made available to a leading aspirant within the APC with the objective of creating confusion, deepening divisions and weakening party unity.

“We have further been informed that a portion of these funds was allegedly made available to a frontline aspirant within our party with the sole objective of creating confusion, sowing division, and undermining the unity of our great party,” the statement said.

The opposition party also accused the state government of attempting to influence the outcome of the recently concluded APC primary elections by sponsoring aspirants for positions in the House of Representatives and the Abia State House of Assembly.

According to the APC, those efforts failed despite what it described as substantial financial inducements and political pressure.

The party maintained that it remained vigilant throughout the primary process and successfully resisted attempts to secure party tickets through alleged backdoor arrangements.

The APC expressed surprise at what it described as growing anxiety within a government that consistently highlights its achievements and claims widespread public support.

The party questioned why a government confident of its popularity would allegedly seek to infiltrate opposition ranks instead of focusing on governance and service delivery.

In the statement, the APC also raised concerns over several government projects and expenditures, saying residents would demand accountability in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.

The party cited the construction of 51 smart schools, a recreational facility project and an ICT centre among issues it believes will attract public scrutiny.

It further claimed that pensioners, retirees and civil servants would seek explanations regarding pensions, gratuities, minimum wage implementation and other outstanding entitlements.

The APC said it remains confident about its political prospects in the state, describing itself as the fastest-growing political movement in Abia.

According to the party, its leadership structure, which it said is being strengthened under the influence of Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu, is expanding across wards, local government areas and senatorial districts.

The party expressed confidence that voters would embrace its vision in future elections and predicted victories in legislative contests as well as the presidential election.

The Abia State Government had not issued an official response to the allegations as of the time of filing this report.
