Innocent Serah is in police custody after her husband, Innocent Nwaoji, was allegedly stabbed in Umuokereke Ngwa
Innocent Serah has been arrested after her husband, Innocent Nwaoji, was allegedly stabbed to death in Umuokereke Ngwa, Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State, on Saturday night, August 8, 2026, leaving residents of the community shocked.
The circumstances surrounding the fatal incident remain unclear, although community members said Nwaoji was allegedly stabbed while he was asleep.
The couple had reportedly married in December 2025 and had been together for barely eight months before the incident.
David Amaraizu, a member of the community, confirmed the incident in a telephone conversation with journalists on Sunday.
Amaraizu said residents were particularly shocked because they were not aware of any disagreement between the couple before the alleged stabbing.
“We are not aware of any disagreement between the couple before the incident,” he said.
He added that Serah had been arrested and was in police custody, while Nwaoji’s body had been deposited at a morgue.
The case has since drawn attention in the community, with residents awaiting further details about what happened inside the couple’s home and what may have preceded the alleged attack.
The Abia State Police Command had yet to issue a substantive public account of the incident as of Monday.
Police Public Relations Officer Maureen Chinaka, when contacted, said, “I will get back to you.” Her further response was still being awaited at the time of filing.
The absence of an official police account means that key details, including the circumstances of the alleged stabbing, the evidence gathered so far and the motive, remain subject to investigation.
The development comes months after another fatal domestic stabbing was reported in Abia State.
In February 2026, the Abia State Police Command confirmed the arrest of a woman in Umuahia over the alleged stabbing death of her husband, an Immigration officer, following an allegation of infidelity.
The then Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, said the suspect had been arrested and was being interrogated by investigators at the State Criminal Investigation Department.
“The suspect was promptly arrested and is being interrogated at the State CID for a case of murder,” Isa said at the time.
The two cases are separate incidents, and there is no indication that the latest case is connected to the February investigation.
For the Umuokereke Ngwa community, the latest incident has raised fresh concern over a fatal episode involving a young marriage whose reported breakdown has yet to be explained.
Serah remains presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty by a court, and the final circumstances of Nwaoji’s death will depend on the outcome of the police investigation and any subsequent legal proceedings.
Investigators are expected to establish what happened before, during and after the alleged attack and determine whether any further evidence or witnesses can clarify the events that led to Nwaoji’s death.
Until the police complete their investigation, claims about the motive or the exact sequence of events remain unconfirmed.
