Abuja-Keffi Road Completion will be delivered by December 2026, says FG, with 50% of the project already done and night work ongoing to ease traffic

Abuja-Keffi Road Completion is now officially set for December 2026, the Federal Government has announced, promising to ease the traffic burden of daily commuters in and out of the Federal Capital Territory.

Speaking during an inspection of the Maraba–Nyanya section on Thursday, the Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, confirmed that over 50% of the 43.6km dual carriageway project has already been completed.

The rehabilitation, which began in December 2023, is being carried out by China Harbour Engineering Company Limited under the NNPCL Tax Credit Scheme.

Goronyo noted that 41km of the Keffi-bound section has been completed up to Binda, while the Abuja-bound lane remains the biggest challenge, particularly a flood-prone 3km stretch near Nyanya.

“This road is one of the busiest in the country, especially for civil servants and residents commuting daily. People are suffering, and the contractor must step up with night-time operations to minimise disruptions,” Goronyo said.

Originally scheduled for May 2026, the deadline has now been adjusted to December 2026 to account for terrain and design challenges.

However, the minister assured the public that strict monitoring will be maintained to prevent further delays.

The project is being funded by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) through the Road Infrastructure Development and Refurbishment Investment Tax Credit Scheme, a model that enables private-sector participation in critical infrastructure development.

Goronyo also ordered immediate palliative measures and temporary routes to ease congestion in the interim.

“We are not happy with the daily gridlock. Our directive is clear: full mobilisation to site and measurable progress,” he stated.

The Project Manager, Dong Hong, representing the Chinese firm, reassured the government that the December 2026 deadline is achievable. “Much of the work is now being executed at night to avoid traffic delays. We remain committed to completing this on time with top quality,” he said.
