Adamawa ex-teachers protest at Government House over 29 months unpaid salaries, demanding compliance with court judgments and payment of entitlements

Scores of former teachers in Adamawa State on Thursday staged a protest at the Government House, demanding the payment of 29 months’ unpaid salaries owed to them by the state government.

The demonstrators, previously employed by the Adamawa State Post-Primary Schools Management Board, marched peacefully while expressing frustration over what they described as prolonged neglect despite multiple court rulings in their favour.

Carrying placards with various messages, the protesters accused the authorities of failing to comply with judgments delivered by the National Industrial Court and the Court of Appeal, which reportedly ordered the settlement of their entitlements.

Their action underscored growing tensions between the affected workers and the state administration.

The group, said to comprise at least 674 former employees, were initially recruited during the administration of former governor Murtala Nyako.

They were later disengaged under the government of Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who maintained that the recruitment process was flawed.

The affected teachers have consistently disputed this position, insisting that their dismissal was unjust and should be reversed or compensated.

Speaking on behalf of the protesters, spokesperson Ismail Bello described the hardship faced by many of the dismissed teachers since their disengagement, noting that the prolonged delay in payment has significantly affected their livelihoods.

He emphasised that the protest became necessary after repeated attempts to secure compliance with court judgments reportedly yielded no results.

The protesters further alleged disregard for the rule of law, warning that their patience is wearing thin if the situation remains unresolved.

They called on the government to honour judicial decisions and settle all outstanding entitlements without further delay.

As of the time of filing this report, the Adamawa State Government had not issued an official response to the protest or the demands raised by the former teachers.

The demonstration adds to ongoing labour-related concerns in the state, highlighting broader issues around employment disputes, judicial compliance, and public sector accountability.
