ADC election transparency call: Party urges INEC to adopt real-time results transmission and strengthen procedures ahead of 2027 general elections

The African Democratic Congress has welcomed the Independent National Electoral Commission’s release of the timetable for the 2027 general elections, emphasizing that credibility will hinge on timely and transparent real-time transmission of results.

In a statement, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the integrity of the polls depends not only on the election schedule but also on transparent procedures and strict adherence to due process.

INEC had earlier set party primaries between May 22 and June 20, 2026, with presidential and National Assembly elections scheduled for February 20, 2027, and governorship and state assembly elections slated for March 6, 2027.

Bolaji Abdullahi stressed the need for clear measures to prevent manipulation and urged the National Assembly to pass binding legislation to remove ambiguity regarding real-time electronic transmission of results.

“We welcome the early release of the timetable, which provides political parties, stakeholders and the Nigerian electorate with the needed clarity for long-term planning and democratic preparation,” he said.

“However, the credibility of the 2027 general elections will ultimately be judged by INEC’s demonstrable commitment to transparency, technological integrity and strict adherence to due process.”

The party highlighted the importance of electronic transmission, noting that while INEC has the technological capacity to deploy real-time result systems, the current Electoral Act leaves critical procedural discretion that affects public confidence.

ADC called on the electoral body to provide early clarity on its readiness to adopt real-time electronic result transmission, alongside defined safeguards—both manual and electronic—to prevent irregularities.

“Nigerians have repeatedly demonstrated their readiness to defend the sanctity of their votes,” the statement added.

“What is now required is for the electoral umpire to match that civic vigilance with institutional clarity, operational transparency and administrative excellence.”
