Akpabio Christian claim draws attention as the Senate President credits his rise to God’s grace while addressing unity in the upper chamber

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has declared that he is the most ranked Christian in government, a remark that has reignited discussion around faith and public office.

The Akpabio Christian claim emerged during the blessing and opening of the Regina Coeli Parish Rectory in Uyo, where he attributed his political ascent to what he described as the special grace of God.

Akpabio told clerics and political leaders gathered for the ceremony that his journey from obscurity to the nation’s number three position is a testimony to divine favour.

He said he remains grateful for what he called God’s preparation for the responsibilities ahead.

He said he belongs to various Christian denominations but considers himself fortunate to be Catholic. He urged Nigerians to remain steadfast in service, insisting that God rewards even the smallest contribution to church projects.

He added that nothing given in service to God is ever wasted, describing such acts as powerful expressions of faith.

Akpabio also revealed plans for a new worship centre within the National Assembly complex. He said the facility would soon be commissioned and invited Nigerians from across the country to attend the event, which he described as a joyful milestone.

In Uyo, the Catholic Bishop of Uyo, Most Rev John Ayah, praised the Senate President and his wife for their support of the church. He said Akpabio should ignore detractors, adding that people often attack those who hold important positions.

He encouraged him to remain focused on his role in national leadership.

The Vice Chairman’s remarks come at a time when interest in Senate stability has resurfaced following reports of internal plots. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele recently dismissed suggestions of attempts to remove Akpabio from office.

He said such claims are unfounded and capable of creating needless tension.

The rebuttal followed comments by former Senate Chief Whip Orji Uzor Kalu, who said lawmakers had previously explored ways to unseat the Senate President but that senior figures intervened to preserve cohesion.

Bamidele insisted there have been no attempts, past or present, to destabilise the chamber.
