Rotimi Amaechi has accused President Tinubu of worsening Nigeria’s economic woes and confirms readiness to join a 2027 opposition coalition, despite remaining in APC

Amaechi accuses Tinubu of failing Nigerians, openly criticising the current administration for deepening the country’s economic crisis and expressing his willingness to join forces with opposition elements ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State made the remarks during an interview with the BBC, where he lamented the harsh economic realities faced by ordinary Nigerians under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership.

“People are dying. People are starving. I myself am feeling the effects of hunger,” Amaechi stated, underscoring the extent of hardship in the country.

Although a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Amaechi was emphatic that loyalty to a party does not equate to blind support for a failing government.

“If the government is failing the country, you don’t just go along because you’re in the same party. You know that’s not right,” he said.

His comments come amid growing speculation of a grand political alliance to challenge Tinubu in 2027.

Amaechi is believed to be a key figure in this emerging opposition bloc, which includes top political actors such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

Notably, both Atiku and El-Rufai attended Amaechi’s recent 60th birthday celebration in Abuja, where they collectively accused Tinubu’s government of “weaponizing poverty.”
