Rotimi Amaechi rejects rumours of being considered for vice president, affirming his focus on contesting Nigeria’s presidency in 2027

Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has denied rumours linking him to a potential vice-presidential position ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 elections.

The speculation arose after media executive Dele Momodu, an ally of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, suggested Amaechi could be considered as Atiku’s running mate if Peter Obi declines to join a joint presidential ticket under the African Democratic Congress.

Momodu cited Amaechi’s past political influence, including his role in supporting Muhammadu Buhari’s previous presidential victory, as reasons why he could be a strong deputy candidate.

However, Amaechi’s media aide, David Iyofor, clarified that the former minister has no interest in serving as vice president.

Iyofor said Amaechi’s focus is solely on contesting the presidency and that there have been no discussions regarding a deputy role.

“I am not aware of any plan or conversation suggesting that Amaechi should be anyone’s running mate,” Iyofor stated.

“Amaechi will not participate in discussions about vice-presidential slots, and we advise politicians to stop speculating about this.”

Amaechi has consistently emphasised his readiness to seek Nigeria’s highest office, citing his extensive political experience and public service record.

He previously reiterated this ambition in May 2022 during meetings with All Progressives Congress delegates.
