Anambra cult arrests raid sees 17 suspects detained in Awka as police recover suspected drugs and other exhibits in a major crackdown

The spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed on Sunday, May 24, 2026, that operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit carried out a coordinated operation in Awka, resulting in a shocking breakthrough that led to 17 arrests linked to alleged cult-related activities and public disturbance.

The intelligence-led raid targeted identified hideouts within Awka, where officers moved in during the early hours of the day to apprehend suspects believed to be involved in unlawful gatherings and activities considered a threat to public order.

According to the police statement, items recovered during the operation included dried leaves suspected to be Cannabis sativa, containers of petroleum jelly, condoms, and other exhibits now undergoing forensic examination as part of ongoing investigations.

Tochukwu Ikenga disclosed that preliminary interrogation suggested possible links between the suspects and the Vikings Confraternity, also known as “Bagger”, although authorities stressed that investigations remain active and unfinalised.

Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu of the Anambra State Police Command described the operation as part of a sustained effort to dismantle criminal networks, warning that cultism, drug abuse, and related offences would be met with firm enforcement.

The commissioner reiterated that the command would not tolerate any activities capable of undermining peace and societal values, noting that the ongoing probe aims to establish the full extent of involvement and potential wider links.

The Anambra cult arrests raid has since drawn attention across the state, with security officials describing it as a decisive step in restoring order and strengthening public safety architecture.
