Carlo Ancelotti says Brazil will treat the historic India clash in Kolkata as no friendly. The sides meet on 3 October

Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti said on Wednesday, 23 September 2026, that the five-time world champions will treat next week’s first senior men’s match in India with full seriousness, telling reporters there is “never a friendly game” for Brazil.

The fixture is set for Kolkata on 3 October 2026. Brazil, ranked fifth in the world and including Vinicius Junior among their squad names, will meet India, ranked 138th by FIFA.

The visit is billed as the first appearance by a full-strength Brazilian men’s national team in India. Pelé travelled there in 1977 and 2015, but not with today’s senior side in a full international.

Carlo Ancelotti, 67, who took charge last year, was quoted by The Times of India. “Brazil has supporters in every corner of the world,” he said. “It’s a pleasure for us to play in India, not just for the Brazilian supporters, but also those in India.”

He added: “It’s a preparatory game, a friendly, but for us, there is never a friendly game.”

Football in India sits behind cricket in national attention, yet it has a fierce following in Kolkata and in Kochi. India have never qualified for a World Cup. For Brazil the match is preparation after two friendlies in Australia.

For Indian supporters it is a rare chance to see a side that last won the World Cup in 2002 and went out in the round of 16 at the most recent tournament.

Carlo Ancelotti said the trip was also about culture. “We have to see other nations, other cultures. We are used to playing friendlies with different styles,” he said. “India will be exciting. It’s true that India does not have a good experience (of playing world-class opponents), but it’s important for us to know how they play. I’ve never been to India. I am very excited to come to Kolkata.”

The Italian is one of the most decorated club coaches in the game, with a record five Champions League titles.

That pedigree is why his warning matters. A 100-place gap on the FIFA list can invite complacency. His line shuts that door in public before the squad lands.
