Manchester United posted a £43m annual loss despite £677.6m revenue, a seventh straight deficit, as broadcasting rose and costs stayed high

Manchester United reported on Wednesday, 23 September 2026, a net loss of £43 million ($57 million) for the year to 30 June 2026, almost one third higher than the previous deficit, even as revenue reached a record £677.6 million.

That turnover was up 1.7 per cent. It was still the club’s seventh straight annual loss after tax. Co-owner Jim Ratcliffe’s cuts to operating costs were offset by contractual payments after the sacking of manager Ruben Amorim and by a rise in loan repayments.

The accounts cover a turbulent 2025/26 season in which former player Michael Carrick replaced Ruben Amorim and took the team from 15th to third in the Premier League, with Champions League football secured.

Broadcasting income rose by almost 20 per cent. Commercial and matchday income each fell by close to 5 per cent in a season with no European matches.

Exceptional items totalled £8.2 million, mostly tied to Ruben Amorim’s departure in January after 14 months.

The club also paid £63.5 million for land next to Old Trafford, the site planned for a new 100,000-capacity stadium. Jim Ratcliffe completed his stake purchase in February 2024 and has since cut jobs and other costs.

Chief executive Omar Berrada said the figures showed underlying strength. “This shows the direct impact of the work we have been doing over the past two years,” he said. “It also proves Manchester United’s enduring popularity and commercial strength. While these results confirm that we are on the right trajectory, we will continue to take a disciplined approach to ensure our finances remain sustainable.”

Manchester United expects revenue of £740 million to £760 million in the current financial year.

Michael Carrick’s side has five points from five Premier League matches, matching the club’s worst start to a season, and went out of the English League Cup last week.
