Party says family security concerns prompted the former candidate to step aside, paving the way for Peter Agada’s emergence as its 2027 flagbearer

The Young Progressives Party on Monday, August 24, 2026, explained that its former presidential candidate, Anita Zugwai-Chukwu, voluntarily withdrew from the 2027 presidential race after members of her immediate and extended family raised concerns about security risks associated with a nationwide campaign.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Egbeola Wale-Martins, disclosed this in a statement clarifying the circumstances surrounding Chukwu’s withdrawal, after what the party described as rumours, speculation and misleading accounts about her decision.

According to the YPP, Chukwu formally communicated her decision to the party leadership in a letter dated August 12, 2026, following extensive consultations with members of her family.

The party said the concerns centred on the level of travelling, movement and public exposure that would accompany a presidential campaign across the country, particularly amid insecurity in parts of Nigeria.

“According to her, the decision was reached after extensive consideration of advice from members of her family concerning the prevailing security situation in several parts of the country,” the statement said.

Chukwu’s decision marked an unexpected turn in a political journey that had placed her among the relatively small number of women seeking Nigeria’s highest political office in 2027.

She had emerged as the YPP’s presidential candidate at the party’s third Elective National Convention and Presidential Primary in Abuja on May 30, 2026, where she was adopted unopposed. The party said Chukwu was selected because of her track record, competence and perceived ability to implement its manifesto, which promotes an egalitarian society based on justice, equity, opportunity and prosperity.

The YPP stressed that her withdrawal was not prompted by pressure from the party or any individual.

“The YPP wishes to state categorically that Mrs Anita Zugwai Chukwu’s decision was freely and voluntarily taken. There was no coercion, intimidation, pressure or undue influence from the party or any individual,” the statement said.

The clarification was significant because Chukwu’s withdrawal came only a few months after the party had publicly presented her as its standard-bearer and she had begun articulating an agenda focused on economic reforms, insecurity, unemployment and reform of Nigeria’s justice system. Following her decision, the YPP said it explored the possibility of replacing Chukwu with another suitably qualified female aspirant.

That effort, however, proved unsuccessful.

The party subsequently conducted a presidential substitution primary in Abuja on Friday, August 21, where Peter Agada emerged as its new presidential candidate. Patience Ndidi-Key was also selected as his running mate. (News Agency of Nigeria)

Agada, a former Labour Party presidential aspirant, joined the YPP after leaving the Labour Party and had already been positioning himself around issues including economic development, grassroots empowerment and political ideology.

Ahead of the substitution primary, Agada rejected political alliances based solely on the prospect of winning elections, arguing that any coalition should have a clear programme for Nigerians.

“Coalition for coalition’s sake does not solve Nigeria’s problems,” Agada said in an interview published before the YPP primary. (The Guardian Nigeria)

His emergence therefore gives the YPP a fresh direction less than three months after Chukwu’s selection, although the party insists that the change does not diminish her standing within its ranks.

The YPP described Chukwu as an important member whose contributions to its progressive agenda remain valued.

The party also moved to address concerns that replacing its first female presidential candidate with a male candidate could undermine its commitment to gender inclusion.

It said its inability to find another woman to fill the vacancy should not be interpreted as a retreat from that principle.

“The YPP also reiterates unequivocally that we are a party of inclusion and equal opportunity. We do not discriminate against anyone on the basis of gender, age, disability or any other status,” the statement said.

The party’s position is consistent with its earlier presentation of Chukwu as a symbol of its effort to widen political participation. The circumstances surrounding her withdrawal also bring the country’s security situation into sharper focus as political parties begin preparing for increasingly intensive campaigns ahead of the 2027 election.

For Chukwu, the decision leaves open the possibility of a return to frontline politics under safer circumstances. The YPP said she had indicated a willingness to serve the country at a more appropriate opportunity in the future.

For the party, however, the immediate task is to consolidate around Agada and present a united platform ahead of the election.

The YPP urged its supporters, the media and members of the public to disregard what it described as unfounded narratives about Chukwu’s withdrawal, insisting that the decision was personal, voluntary and reached after careful family consideration.

With Agada now formally carrying the party’s presidential ticket, the YPP enters the next phase of the 2027 race after an abrupt but consequential change at the top of its presidential campaign.
