The 32-year-old underwent scans which confirmed damage to his rectus femoris muscle. While the club statement did not specify the length of his absence, Spanish daily AS reported that the injury is “serious” and could keep him out of action for around two months.

Rudiger has featured just once in La Liga this season, following a campaign last year in which he played through various knocks but still made 55 appearances across competitions.

The setback leaves Real Madrid facing defensive concerns despite signing 20-year-old Netherlands-born Spanish international Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth during the summer window.

Reports in Spain also suggest that the club is monitoring Liverpool’s French centre-back Ibrahima Konaté as a possible long-term reinforcement.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side visit Real Sociedad in La Liga on Saturday before beginning their Champions League campaign at home to Marseille on Tuesday, with the absence of Rudiger likely to test their defensive depth.
