Kylian Mbappe, last season’s European Golden Shoe winner, coolly converted six minutes into the second half after being brought down by Juan Cruz. His decisive finish gave new coach Xabi Alonso a winning start at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The result extended Madrid’s remarkable record of remaining unbeaten in opening league fixtures since 2008, as they began a new chapter following Carlo Ancelotti’s departure.

Summer signing Trent Alexander-Arnold made his La Liga debut, joining Dean Huijsen and Alvaro Carreras in the starting lineup. However, Jude Bellingham was absent, sidelined until October following shoulder surgery.
