Former Real Madrid defender Pepe believes Barcelona are the favorites to win the Copa del Rey final but insists his old club can never be written off

Former Real Madrid star Pepe has shared his prediction for the upcoming Copa del Rey final between his old club and arch-rivals Barcelona, stating that while he considers the Catalans the favorites, Real Madrid’s fighting spirit means they can never be discounted.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are set to clash for the third time this season in the Copa del Rey final on Saturday. Barcelona holds an undefeated record against Real Madrid this season, having won the previous two El Clásico encounters. Their current form further positions them as the perceived frontrunners for the cup title.

Speaking to Diario AS, Pepe acknowledged Barcelona’s favorable position. “Barça favorites? Yes,” he stated. However, the legendary defender was quick to emphasize the resilience of his former team.

“But you can never write off Madrid. Madrid is a team that always stands up. It’s in difficult moments that they show what they’re all about,” Pepe added.

Pepe enjoyed a highly successful decade-long career with Real Madrid from 2007 to 2017, during which he won numerous accolades, including three Champions League titles and three LaLiga titles.

The former Portugal international made 344 appearances for the Madrid giants before retiring from professional football in August 2024.
