APC primary election disputes spark urgent call from TPA for transparent resolution of petitions and official result declaration nationwide

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, and the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) have been urged to urgently address petitions arising from the recently concluded primary elections and formally announce authentic results across the country.

The appeal was made on Thursday, May 28, 2026, by a political advocacy group, Turning Point Agenda (TPA), in a letter signed by its National Coordinator, Paul Oluwaseun Mashote, amid growing concerns over the credibility of internal party processes.

The group warned that the continued circulation of unofficial results in sections of the media could undermine public confidence and intensify tensions among party members, particularly aspirants awaiting final determinations.

TPA specifically referenced assurances previously given by the APC leadership that all grievances arising from the primaries would be handled through proper internal mechanisms before any official announcement of outcomes.

Paul Oluwaseun Mashote noted that the concern became more pronounced following comments attributed to Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda during an appearance on Politics Today on Channels Television on Sunday, May 24, 2026, where he stressed that only the party’s authorised national directorate could validly announce results.

Despite this clarification, the group observed that alleged final results continued to circulate across various media platforms, including reports linked to The Nation newspaper, creating what it described as confusion and uncertainty.

The APC primary election disputes, according to TPA, have already begun generating tension in some constituencies, including the Ikorodu Constituency I primary for the Lagos State House of Assembly, where competing claims have emerged.

The group argued that premature publication of results before the conclusion of internal appeals processes risks breaching due process and weakening trust in the party’s democratic structures.

“The premature dissemination of unofficial results, especially in a politically sensitive environment, creates confusion, breeds distrust, and heightens the risk of avoidable conflict among supporters of aspirants,” the letter stated.

TPA called on the APC leadership to expedite the hearing and resolution of all pending petitions, insisting that internal dispute mechanisms must be fully exhausted before any declaration of winners is made.

It further urged the party to publicly reaffirm that only its designated national organ has the authority to announce binding results of its primaries, in order to prevent reliance on speculative reports.

The group also demanded that the final outcomes reflect transparency, accountability and verifiable processes capable of commanding broad acceptance among stakeholders.

A powerfully worded warning in the letter stressed that the credibility of the party’s internal democracy remains central to its wider political strength and public perception.

TPA added that failure to resolve the APC primary election disputes decisively could threaten unity within the party and create avoidable political instability ahead of future elections.
