APWEN launches a Consultancy Apprenticeship Programme, enrolling 200 female engineers to gain real project experience and mentorship from top consulting firms

APWEN Consultancy Apprenticeship Programme is setting a bold new standard for mentorship and industry integration, as the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), Lagos Chapter, launched a pioneering initiative to bridge the gap between engineering education and real-world consulting practice.

In a statement, APWEN Lagos Chapter Chairperson, Engr. Atinuke Owolabi, revealed that the Structured Engineering Consultancy Apprenticeship Programme (SECAP) had already attracted 200 young female engineers eager to gain hands-on training with leading consulting firms.

“This is more than a mentorship programme—it’s a real opportunity for immersive learning, project participation, and clear job pathways,” Owolabi said.

She noted that the programme builds on the chapter’s ongoing impact.

Just a month ago, over 20 APWEN-trained engineers were employed by the Dangote Group through their Graduate Trainee Programme—proof that these initiatives deliver measurable outcomes.

The event was co-hosted by the President of the Association for Consulting Engineering in Nigeria (ACEN), Engr. Kam-Selem Bukar, whose keynote highlighted the importance of gender inclusion in engineering.

Owolabi praised his “transformative leadership” and thanked Engr. Funmi Kadri FNSE, a founding APWEN member and Managing Director of ACEN, for her continued mentorship.

Kadri emphasized the power of community and guidance:

“To our young engineers, this is not just a programme. It’s the start of a movement. You will gain more than skills—you’ll build confidence, resilience, and a professional network.”

With real projects, structured mentorship, and corporate partnerships, the APWEN Consultancy Apprenticeship Programme represents a powerful new model for career acceleration in Nigeria’s engineering sector.

Young engineers will gain experience in consulting environments while building critical soft and technical skills needed to thrive in an evolving industry.
