Aston Villa strengthened their bid for Champions League qualification with a thrilling 4-2 victory over Liverpool on Friday night, dealing a damaging blow to the visitors’ hopes of securing a top-four finish.

Two goals from Ollie Watkins inspired Villa to a memorable win at Villa Park as manager Unai Emery was rewarded for fielding a strong line-up ahead of next week’s Europa League final.

Emi Buendia struck the crossbar before Watkins reacted quickest to score his second goal after goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili produced fine saves to deny Youri Tielemans and Pau Torres.

A sensational strike from Villa captain John McGinn into the top corner sealed a powerful victory for Emery’s side and sparked wild celebrations inside Villa Park.

Van Dijk scored again in stoppage time for Liverpool, but the late effort did little to mask another troubling performance from the Reds.

The Aston Villa Champions League ambition now looks increasingly realistic as the club edges closer to only a second appearance in Europe’s premier competition since the 1982/83 season.
