Atletico Madrid’s push for a top-eight finish in the Champions League league phase suffered a setback after a 1-1 draw away at Galatasaray.

The result left Atletico provisionally eighth with one match remaining, but the three-time finalists now face a more complicated route to securing automatic qualification for the last 16.

Giuliano Simeone gave the visitors an early advantage, scoring in the fourth minute to reward a composed start from Diego Simeone’s side.

Atletico briefly silenced the hostile atmosphere when Simeone nodded home from Matteo Ruggeri’s cross, delivering the ideal opening for the Spanish club.

Galatasaray responded after 20 minutes when Marcos Llorente turned Roland Sallai’s cross into his own net while attempting an interception.

The goal denied Jan Oblak a clean sheet on his 100th Champions League appearance.

The hosts pressed for a second before half-time, with Baris Yilmaz wasting a clear opening by firing over the bar when well placed.

Atletico came close to regaining the lead just before the hour mark, but Abdulkerim Bardakci cleared David Hancko’s effort off the line to preserve parity.

Diego Simeone introduced Antoine Griezmann in search of greater attacking control, keeping Julian Alvarez on the pitch despite the forward’s recent struggles in front of goal.

Griezmann threatened late on with a curling free-kick that forced Ugurcan Cakir into a sharp save.

The Galatasaray goalkeeper then denied Alex Baena to secure a valuable point.

The hosts almost snatched victory in the closing moments, but Llorente redeemed himself with a decisive interception to deny Eren Elmali.

Galatasaray now travel to Manchester City for their final league phase match as they chase a place in the play-off round. Atletico host Bodo Glimt and still retain a chance of finishing inside the top eight.
