Babajide wins Player of the Match award after providing two assists in Nigeria’s 6-2 WAFCON 2026 victory over Egypt

Omorinsola Babajide was named Player of the Match after inspiring Nigeria’s Super Falcons to a commanding 6-2 victory over Egypt in their final Group C fixture at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Babajide wins Player of the Match award recognition came after the Liverpool winger delivered a creative performance on her first appearance of the tournament, providing two assists as Nigeria secured qualification for the quarter-finals.

Babajide made an immediate impact after being introduced into the starting line-up, helping the defending champions produce their most convincing display of the competition so far.

The versatile winger created Nigeria’s second goal four minutes before half-time, delivering the assist for substitute Gift Monday, who doubled the Super Falcons’ advantage against the Cleopatras.

She continued to influence the contest after the break, setting up another substitute, Uchenna Kanu, for Nigeria’s fourth goal nine minutes from the end of normal time as the African champions extended their lead.

The individual honour made Babajide the second Nigerian player to win the Player of the Match award at the WAFCON 2026 finals.

Defender Michelle Alozie previously claimed the accolade during Nigeria’s second group match against Zambia, where the Super Falcons secured a narrow 1-0 victory.

Babajide’s contribution came at a crucial stage of Nigeria’s campaign after the team recovered from an opening 3-2 defeat to Malawi with successive victories over Zambia and Egypt.

The Super Falcons will now turn their attention to the knockout stage, where they face the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon in the quarter-finals in Casablanca on Sunday.

With momentum growing after their attacking display against Egypt, Nigeria will aim to continue their title defence and move closer to securing a record-extending 11th WAFCON trophy.
