The Spanish champions call off their August 15 fixture against Ittihad Riadi Tangier as uncertainty grows around the Morocco-Ceuta border

Barcelona have cancelled their planned pre-season friendly against Moroccan club Ittihad Riadi Tangier, scheduled for August 15, 2026, with the Spanish champions citing uncertainty surrounding the circumstances in the region amid the escalating Ceuta border crisis.

Barcelona announced the decision on Friday, August 7, bringing an abrupt end to plans for the fixture in Tangier as Hansi Flick’s squad continues preparations for the new La Liga season.

The club did not explicitly identify the Ceuta situation as the reason for cancelling the match, but the decision comes against the backdrop of a serious border and migration crisis involving Ceuta, the Spanish territory on Morocco’s northern coast.

“In light of the current uncertainty and circumstances, FC Barcelona considers playing the match would be inappropriate,” Barcelona said in a statement.

The cancellation comes at a sensitive moment for the relationship between Spain and Morocco, with Ceuta dealing with a major influx of migrants who have crossed from Morocco by land and sea.

Recent reports have described an unusually large number of attempted crossings. Ceuta authorities said more than 1,500 migrants, including adults and minors, had reached the territory by sea in the days leading up to July 29, overwhelming reception facilities.

On July 30, more than 800 Moroccan and Algerian migrants attempted to swim towards Ceuta, according to Spain’s EFE news agency. Spanish maritime rescuers recovered more than 300 people, while two bodies were found at sea.

The crisis has since developed into a wider humanitarian and administrative challenge.

Spain’s government said on Friday that it planned to begin transferring unaccompanied migrant minors from Ceuta to mainland Spain within weeks. Youth Minister Sira Rego said 1,342 minors had been registered, while reception facilities designed for roughly 90 children were hosting about 1,100.

The situation has also placed pressure on local authorities and emergency services, with Ceuta’s reception system struggling to cope with the sudden increase in arrivals.

For Barcelona, the circumstances have introduced an unexpected complication into what had been planned as a conventional pre-season tour.

The Tangier fixture was intended to form part of the club’s preparations ahead of the new campaign, offering Flick an opportunity to continue assessing his squad before the competitive season begins.

Instead, Barcelona now face another adjustment to their schedule.

The club had already experienced disruption to its pre-season programme after a planned friendly against Preston North End was called off following the team’s training camp in the United Kingdom, where Barcelona had faced Birmingham City.

Barcelona are expected to continue their preparations with other fixtures, including a friendly against Nottingham Forest in Udine, Italy, before facing Egyptian club Al Ahly on August 19.

The Spanish champions will then turn their attention to the defence of their La Liga title, with Flick’s side scheduled to open the league campaign against Elche on August 23.

The cancellation in Tangier also means that Ittihad Riadi Tangier will lose the opportunity to host one of European football’s most recognisable clubs.

For Barcelona, however, the decision reflects the practical uncertainty surrounding a region experiencing a rapidly developing border crisis.

The club’s wording leaves open the precise circumstances that prompted the decision, but its reference to the prevailing uncertainty underscores the difficulty of staging an international sporting event while authorities on both sides of the border are managing a significant humanitarian and security situation.

The Ceuta crisis has also revived memories of previous migration surges in the territory. In July 2021, more than 8,000 people entered Ceuta over two days during another major border incident, although the circumstances surrounding the latest surge are different and remain the subject of competing interpretations.

The immediate impact on Barcelona is relatively modest compared with the humanitarian pressures facing Ceuta, but the cancellation illustrates how events beyond football can quickly affect international sporting plans.

Flick’s priority will now be to maintain momentum ahead of the new season, while Barcelona work through a revised pre-season schedule.

For Ittihad Riadi Tangier, the proposed meeting with the Spanish champions will not go ahead. For Barcelona, the focus shifts back to preparations for a title defence that begins in just over two weeks.
