Rangers NPFL title defence opener sees the champions host Katsina United as Inter Lagos make their historic top-flight debut against Shooting Stars

Defending Nigeria Premier Football League champions Enugu Rangers will begin their 2026/27 NPFL title defence against Katsina United at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, on Sunday, August 30, 2026, as the league prepares for another competitive season.

Rangers, popularly known as the Flying Antelopes, secured their ninth league crown last season and will open their campaign in front of their home supporters at the stadium widely known as the “Cathedral”.

The champions will be hoping to maintain the momentum that delivered another historic title success while facing a Katsina United side determined to start the new season with a strong performance.

The opening weekend will also feature a significant moment for newcomers Inter Lagos, who will play their first-ever NPFL fixture after earning promotion from the Nigeria National League last season.

Inter Lagos will travel to Ibadan to face former champions Shooting Stars at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, on Friday, August 28, 2026, in a South West derby that will mark the beginning of their top-flight journey.

The fixture is expected to attract attention as Shooting Stars aim to return to their former heights, while Inter Lagos look to establish themselves among Nigeria’s elite clubs.

The 2026/27 season opener will also see several established NPFL sides begin their campaigns across different venues on Sunday, August 30.

Rivers United will host Plateau United, while Enyimba will travel to face Niger Tornadoes in another encounter involving two of the league’s respected names.

Other opening-day fixtures include Abia Warriors against Kun Khalifat, Barau FC versus Nasarawa United, Bendel Insurance against Warri Wolves and Kwara United hosting Kano Pillars.

Newly competitive sides will also be seeking early points, with Doma United facing Sporting Lagos and Ikorodu City taking on Ranchers Bees.

The new season arrives with expectations of another closely contested title race, as clubs continue to strengthen their squads and pursue domestic success.
