The 23-year-old former England youth international is seeking clearance to represent the Super Eagles, with his proposed switch now awaiting FIFA’s approval, according to a report by OwnGoalNigeria.com cited by PM News on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.

The documents submitted reportedly include his newly acquired Nigerian international passport, a key step in the process of establishing his eligibility to represent the country.

The midfielder reportedly held discussions with Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle before deciding to pursue the switch to Nigeria.

Chelle is looking to strengthen his midfield options, and Iroegbunam could provide another choice if FIFA approves the change of international allegiance.

The player is said to be hoping that the process will be completed in time for him to be considered for Nigeria’s matches in November.

However, his availability for those fixtures will depend on the outcome of FIFA’s review and any applicable eligibility requirements.

Iroegbunam currently plays for Hull City and has previously featured for Aston Villa and Everton, giving him experience in English football.

His potential arrival would offer the Super Eagles another midfield option as the national team continues to assess players eligible to represent Nigeria.

The midfielder’s reported interest in joining the team also comes as Nigeria looks towards future international competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Despite the reported progress, Iroegbunam has not yet been confirmed as eligible to represent Nigeria.

FIFA must approve the international switch before he can be selected for the Super Eagles, subject to the relevant eligibility rules.

If the application is successful, the midfielder could become another player with experience in English football available to Nigeria’s national team.
