President Tinubu congratulates Bashir Adewale Adeniyi on becoming the first Nigerian elected Chair of the World Customs Organisation Council in Brussels

Bashir Adeniyi WCO chair appointment has been hailed by President Bola Tinubu as a moment of pride for Nigeria, following his unanimous election to lead the World Customs Organisation Council.

The historic development makes Adeniyi the first Nigerian to head the global body since its establishment in 1952. The WCO, with 186 member nations, stands as the highest decision-making authority in international customs operations.

President Tinubu praised Adeniyi’s leadership qualities and his reform-driven tenure at the Nigeria Customs Service, which began two years ago. The president described the election as a momentous achievement that reflects Nigeria’s rising influence in global economic governance.

“I congratulate the Customs boss for bringing pride and validation to our country and the economic reforms,” Tinubu said in a statement. “May he exceed the expectations of the WCO Council.”

The election took place in Brussels, where the WCO is headquartered. According to Tinubu, the symbolic hoisting of Nigeria’s flag at the WCO marks a significant diplomatic victory and the beginning of a new chapter for Nigerian customs diplomacy.

Since assuming the role of Comptroller-General, Adeniyi has introduced far-reaching reforms across the Nigeria Customs Service.

These include surpassing revenue benchmarks, fostering improved relations with stakeholders, modernising customs processes, and accelerating the digitisation of operations for better efficiency.

Tinubu extended his commendation to the NCS Board, management, and staff for playing a part in securing this international honour.

Adeniyi will take over from Edward Kieswetter of South Africa’s Revenue Service on July 1, 2025. His new position gives Nigeria a strategic voice in the shaping of global customs policies and the promotion of best practices among WCO members.

President Tinubu also expressed appreciation to the WCO Secretary-General and all member states for backing Adeniyi’s leadership. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to supporting the WCO’s objectives throughout Adeniyi’s term.
