Mikel Arteta’s side open talks for the Brazilian midfielder as early transfer negotiations hit an immediate hurdle

Newcastle United have turned down an opening £55 million offer from Arsenal for midfielder Bruno Guimarães, in what marks an early setback in the Gunners’ transfer plans ahead of the new season.

Arsenal, managed by Mikel Arteta, are understood to have identified the Brazilian international as a key midfield target and made formal contact within the last 24 hours.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reported that initial discussions were opened between both clubs, with Arsenal testing Newcastle’s valuation of the player.

However, the proposal was immediately rejected, with Newcastle making it clear they are unwilling to sanction a sale at that price.

The reported Bruno Guimarães transfer talks remain ongoing in principle, although Newcastle’s stance suggests negotiations could prove difficult unless Arsenal return with a significantly improved offer.

Guimarães has been one of Newcastle’s most influential midfielders since his arrival, playing a central role in their domestic and European ambitions.

He has also impressed on the international stage, featuring strongly for Brazil at the ongoing FIFA World Cup, further boosting his reputation across Europe.

With two years remaining on his current contract, Newcastle are under no immediate pressure to sell and are prioritising squad stability ahead of the new campaign.
