Coventry City secured a remarkable 4-1 victory over Newcastle United on Monday, October 12, 2026, climbing out of the Premier League relegation zone with an impressive performance at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
Frank Lampard’s side made history with the result, becoming the first club in 127 years to record consecutive English top-flight victories immediately after losing their opening four matches without scoring.
The emphatic win lifted Coventry from 19th to 14th in the league table and strengthened their hopes of avoiding relegation in their first Premier League season since 2001.
Jack Rudoni opened the scoring from the penalty spot early in the first half, registering Coventry’s first-ever Premier League goal at the CBS Arena, which has been the club’s home since 2005.
The Sky Blues doubled their advantage three minutes after the interval through 19-year-old Guinean forward Sidiki Cherif, who marked his first Premier League start with a superb finish from the edge of the penalty area.
Newcastle defender Sven Botman reduced the deficit in the 70th minute with a powerful strike from approximately 20 yards, raising hopes of a comeback for the visitors.
However, Coventry restored their two-goal cushion in the 81st minute when Ellis Simms capitalised on a costly mistake by Newcastle midfielder Joelinton. Simms, who had just come off the bench, saw his deflected effort beat goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek.
Stephen Mfuni then completed the scoring in the 86th minute, firing home from long range to seal a memorable night for the home supporters.
Newcastle had opportunities to take control of the contest but failed to convert several promising openings, particularly during the first half.
Goalkeeper Hornicek handed Coventry an early advantage when he fumbled the ball and brought down Cherif while attempting to clear the danger, allowing Rudoni to score from the resulting penalty in the sixth minute.
The visitors dominated possession and created chances through Harvey Barnes, Jacob Murphy and Matias Fernandez-Pardo.
Barnes narrowly missed a close-range opportunity after being set up by Joe Willock, while Murphy fired just over from distance.
Fernandez-Pardo also came close, but Coventry defender Bobby Thomas produced two crucial goal-line clearances to keep Newcastle at bay, including a second intervention just before half-time.
Those defensive contributions proved vital as Coventry capitalised on their opportunities after the break.
Coventry entered the match looking to build on their first points of the season, secured with a 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest before the international break.
Their triumph over Newcastle marked their first win against the Magpies since 1999 and provided a significant boost to their survival campaign.
Lampard’s team will now aim to extend their winning run to three matches when they travel to face Tottenham Hotspur on October 19.
Newcastle, meanwhile, missed the opportunity to move into fourth place in the Premier League standings. The defeat was their second in six league matches this season.
The result will leave manager Matthias Jaissle reflecting on his side’s missed chances and defensive errors as Newcastle look to regain consistency in the coming fixtures.
For Coventry, however, the four-goal display offers renewed confidence as they attempt to establish themselves in the top flight and secure Premier League survival.
