African Nations League launched by CAF as a new annual competition to boost elite national team football across the continent

The Confederation of African Football, CAF, has officially launched the African Nations League, unveiling a new annual competition aimed at providing consistent, high-level football for the continent’s senior national teams.

CAF announced the development on Monday, stating that the African Nations League will serve as a world-class platform for Africa’s best players to compete regularly at continental level.

In a statement shared on CAF’s official X handle, the football governing body said the competition guarantees an annual senior national team tournament featuring top African talent.

CAF said the initiative is designed to strengthen African football by promoting competitive fixtures, improving player development and expanding fan engagement across the continent.

The governing body added that the league will offer African players increased exposure while creating sustainable opportunities for national associations and technical teams.

The launch underscores CAF’s broader ambition to elevate African football’s global standing through structured competitions and consistent elite-level match opportunities.

The announcement comes amid broader reforms within African football administration.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe recently disclosed that the Africa Cup of Nations will move to a four-year cycle after an edition planned for 2028, marking a significant shift from its long-standing biennial format.
