The Ecuador international was introduced in the 68th minute as Alonso looked to regain control of a match that had become increasingly uncomfortable after Chelsea surrendered much of a three-goal advantage.

Caicedo had only recently returned to training on Friday and was making his first appearance of the season. His return lasted just 13 minutes before discomfort forced him out of the contest.

Chelsea had raced into a 3-0 lead within 32 minutes, with Romeo Lavia scoring his first Chelsea goal before Pedro Neto and former Brighton forward João Pedro added further strikes.

Brighton responded through Malick Yalcouyé before half-time and moved within one goal when a Pascal Groß effort deflected off João Pedro and into the Chelsea net in the 63rd minute.

Cole Palmer then restored Chelsea’s two-goal advantage with a superb finish from 20 yards, giving Alonso’s side enough breathing room to withstand a late Brighton assault. Groß scored again in the sixth minute of stoppage time, but the visitors could not complete the comeback.

The result maintained Chelsea’s perfect Premier League start under Alonso, who has won both of his league matches since taking charge.

The victory also extended his winning competitive run to three matches following the League Cup success against Luton.

Despite the positive result, the match exposed some defensive concerns for Alonso. Chelsea’s early dominance faded and Brighton were able to exploit spaces as the hosts struggled to control the contest after the interval.

New goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez also made his Chelsea debut, producing several important saves despite conceding three goals.

For Alonso, the immediate priority will be preserving the momentum of a winning start while ensuring that key players return to full fitness.
