Cancer Treatment Subsidy Nigeria: FG launches N400,000 radiotherapy support, unveils oncology centres to aid 2,000+ patients and train 500 clinicians

Cancer Treatment Subsidy Nigeria has taken a bold step forward as the Federal Government announced a new cost-sharing initiative to ease the financial burden on cancer patients.

The scheme will subsidize radiotherapy treatment by up to N400,000 for low-income earners through a partnership with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).

The announcement came alongside the inauguration of three state-of-the-art oncology centres in Katsina, Nsukka, and Benin, a key move under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

These centres, fully equipped with advanced diagnostic and radiotherapy equipment, will serve over 2,000 cancer patients annually, while providing diagnostic services to more than 350,000 Nigerians across the regions.

According to the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the centres will also train 500 oncology clinicians over three years through a public-private partnership with MedServe and the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority.

This is the first phase of a nationwide cancer care revolution, with seven more centres planned in Maiduguri, Port Harcourt, Ilorin, Yola, and other locations.

All are scheduled to open by World Cancer Day 2026, reinforcing Nigeria’s push for equitable, affordable healthcare.

Coordinating Health Minister, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, emphasized that the facilities reflect the administration’s commitment to tackling non-communicable diseases, saying: “Together, we are building a healthier future — one centre at a time.”
