Cassava industrialisation Nigeria gets a major boost as the Federal Government and Flour Mills of Nigeria unite to transform the cassava value chain and exports

Cassava industrialisation Nigeria has received a major boost as the Federal Government and Flour Mills of Nigeria (FMN) announce a strategic alliance to scale cassava processing and reduce import dependence.

Marking World Cassava Day 2025, FMN said the collaboration aims to unlock the full economic potential of Nigeria’s cassava value chain through innovation, local content development, and strategic investment.

In a statement, FMN described the initiative as one designed to “create export value within the cassava value chain for economic transformation and reduce Nigeria’s heavy reliance on imported raw materials.”

The company’s Premium Cassava Products Division (PCPD) and Golden Agri Inputs Limited (GAIL) were at the forefront of the event, participating in conversations around scale, market readiness and youth-led innovation.

A pitch competition by cassava changemakers also showcased impactful ideas across the sector.

Akhanemeh Osikhena, General Manager of PCPD at FMN Agro, highlighted the company’s long-term dedication to transforming the local cassava narrative.

“Now more than before, it has become a key imperative to develop the cassava value chain as a viable raw material for various finished products,” Osikhena said.

He stressed that the company’s backward integration strategy supports smallholder farmers with access to training, quality inputs, and off-take guarantees.

FMN has also invested heavily in industrial starch production, part of a broader drive to reduce the need for imported alternatives.

Sadiq Usman, Managing Director of FMN Agro and Group Director for Partnerships and Strategic Engagements, commended the Federal Government for facilitating the conversation on cassava development.

“We commend the Federal Government through the Office of the Senior Assistant to the President on Agribusiness and Productivity Enhancement for organising this event,” Usman said.

The 2025 edition of World Cassava Day brought together policymakers, investors, agro-processors and farmers to reimagine Nigeria’s position as the world’s top cassava producer, not just by volume but by value.

With a sharpened focus on cassava industrialisation Nigeria can achieve food security, create jobs and compete on a global scale.
