Celtic interim coach Martin O’Neill says no decision has been made on Kelechi Iheanacho’s future, stressing the striker must focus on fitness

Celtic interim head coach Martin O’Neill has said the club has not yet made a decision on the future of Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho.

Kelechi Iheanacho Celtic future decision remains open despite the forward’s recent impact, as the club continues to assess his fitness and long-term role at Celtic Park.

Iheanacho joined Celtic on a free transfer last summer after leaving Spanish side Sevilla, but injuries have limited his consistency since his arrival.

The 29-year-old, however, delivered a crucial moment on Sunday when he came off the bench to score the winning goal in Celtic’s 2-1 victory over Hibernian at Easter Road.

So far this season, Iheanacho has scored seven goals for the Scottish Premiership champions as they push to defend their title.

O’Neill said the club’s immediate focus is the striker’s fitness, stressing that any discussion about his future will come later.

According to him, Iheanacho must continue to prove his fitness on the pitch before any long-term decisions are made.

“That’s a conversation for another day. Right now, his fitness is the most important thing,” O’Neill said after the match.

Celtic remain focused on the closing stages of the season as they evaluate squad options ahead of the next campaign.
