Champions League debut patches will honour first-time players in 2026/27, with match-worn patches transformed into signed Topps 1-of-1 cards

UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin, Fanatics founder and chief executive Michael Rubin, UEFA and UC3 announced in London on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, the introduction of Champions League debut patches to recognise players making their first appearances in Europe’s premier club competition during the 2026/27 season.

The new initiative will give Champions League debutants a distinctive marker on their shirts while creating a lasting piece of memorabilia from one of the defining moments of their careers.

The debut patch will be incorporated into the competition’s familiar Starball badge on a player’s jersey sleeve. The special blue element will be worn only during the match in which the player makes a first appearance.

The initiative applies whether the player starts the match or enters as a substitute. A player named in the matchday squad but left unused on the bench will not qualify until making an appearance on the pitch.

Once the debut match ends, the blue debut element will be carefully removed from the match-worn shirt and authenticated. It will then be securely packaged with a Certificate of Authenticity before being transferred to Topps.

Topps will incorporate each authenticated patch into a unique one-of-one trading card signed by the player. The cards are scheduled to feature in a UEFA Champions League product later in the season, turning a fleeting sporting milestone into a collectible with a clear link to the match itself.

The process also means the match-worn shirt retains a visual reference to the player’s first Champions League appearance after the patch has been removed. UEFA said the design and positioning were developed with Topps and official patch supplier ID Unlimited.

For players, the significance is largely personal. A Champions League debut represents a major career landmark, and UEFA says the new programme is intended to place the player at the centre of that moment while allowing supporters to own a tangible reminder of it.

Čeferin welcomed the wider partnership with Fanatics, describing the renewed relationship as a way to create high-quality products for supporters and collectors.

“Fanatics know how to make big moments feel special. We are excited for what’s next,” the UEFA president said.

The debut-patch programme is part of a broader six-year extension between UC3 and Fanatics Collectibles covering the 2027 to 2033 cycle. The agreement spans the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Women’s Champions League, Europa League, Conference League, Super Cup and Youth League, with products to be developed through Fanatics Collectibles and produced under the Topps brand.

Rubin said the timing of the announcement was particularly significant as the new Champions League campaign approaches, while pointing to Fanatics’ expanding presence in Europe.

“Together UEFA, European Football Clubs and Fanatics will continue to bring innovative products to fans and collectors for years to come,” Rubin said.

The concept is not entirely new to sports memorabilia. Fanatics and Topps have previously used debut patches in American sports, including Major League Baseball, where players have worn patches during their first big-league appearances before the memorabilia was authenticated and incorporated into trading cards.

The Champions League adaptation gives the concept a powerful new setting, bringing a well-established collecting culture into European club football and giving supporters a direct physical connection to a player’s first night on the competition’s biggest stage.

Importantly, a player will not wear the Champions League debut patch again after making the first appearance. That remains the case even if the player subsequently moves to another club competing in UEFA competitions.

The first patches are planned for Matchday 1 of the 2026/27 campaign. For the players involved, the small badge will mark a once-only occasion.

For collectors, it will offer something considerably rarer: a piece of the actual shirt worn during a player’s first Champions League appearance, authenticated and transformed into a signed one-of-one card.
