Chelsea Marcus Rashford talks have emerged as a late transfer twist, with the Blues considering a move for the Manchester United forward

Chelsea have entered the race for Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford with the 2026 summer transfer window approaching its deadline, adding a surprise twist to the England international’s uncertain future at Old Trafford.

The development comes as Chelsea continue to reshape their squad under new head coach Xabi Alonso after a lavish summer recruitment campaign.

The London club began the Premier League season with a 3-2 victory over Fulham on Monday, 24 August.

Reports of Chelsea’s interest revive a possibility that has surfaced previously. Chelsea were among the clubs linked with Rashford earlier in the summer, although no deal materialised while the forward’s situation at Manchester United remained unresolved.

Rashford, 28, returned to Manchester United this summer following a season-long loan at Barcelona. He had spent the previous half-season on loan at Aston Villa after falling out of favour at Old Trafford.

His position became particularly uncertain after his relationship with former United manager Ruben Amorim deteriorated.

Rashford had not played for United since December 2024 before leaving on loan, but Michael Carrick’s appointment subsequently created the possibility of a fresh start.

In July, The Guardian reported that Rashford was expected to return to United after England’s World Cup campaign and be reintegrated into Carrick’s squad.

United, however, remained keen to reduce their wage bill, with Rashford reportedly earning about £17.5 million a year.

That situation has changed little in recent weeks. Carrick has maintained that Rashford remains a Manchester United player, even as the club continues to consider potential options before the transfer deadline.

Rashford was handed the No.9 shirt for the new season and came off the bench in United’s opening Premier League match against Hull City.

His future, nevertheless, remains one of the more intriguing stories of the closing days of the window.

Chelsea’s interest would represent an intriguing development because of the clubs’ recent transfer relationship.

Manchester United agreed a deal worth £50 million, including £48 million guaranteed and £2 million in add-ons, to sign midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea earlier in the summer.

Chelsea have already committed heavily to Alonso’s project. The club completed the £117 million signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, making him the most expensive British player in football history at the time of the deal. Rogers signed a contract running until 2033.

Rogers immediately offered Chelsea supporters encouragement by scoring on his competitive debut in the 3-2 win against Fulham. João Pedro and Cole Palmer also scored as Alonso began his Premier League reign with an entertaining victory.

Chelsea’s spending has reportedly reached about £347 million this summer, including the Rogers deal, as the club pursue significant squad changes under Alonso.

A move for Rashford would therefore need to fit both Chelsea’s squad structure and financial planning. The forward’s versatility, Premier League experience and record of producing goals from wide positions could nevertheless make him an attractive late-window option.

For Manchester United, the question is equally significant. Rashford has two years remaining on his contract and United would prefer to avoid carrying his substantial salary if a suitable permanent move can be negotiated.

The forward’s recent career has been uneven. After producing 30 goals in the 2022/23 season, Rashford struggled for consistency and eventually found himself outside Amorim’s plans.

His loan spell at Barcelona offered a chance to rebuild his reputation, and he scored the goal that helped Barcelona beat Real Madrid 2-0 in May and secure the La Liga title.

Barcelona had previously been viewed as his preferred destination, but the Catalan club subsequently strengthened its attack with the signing of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle, reducing the likelihood of Rashford returning to Spain.

Chelsea’s emergence therefore adds an unexpected option at a crucial stage of the transfer window.

There is, however, an important distinction between interest and a completed deal.

At present, Chelsea’s reported move represents a late pursuit rather than a confirmed transfer, and Rashford remains a Manchester United player.

With the deadline approaching, the coming days could determine whether the England forward begins another chapter at Old Trafford, returns to a club outside England or makes the striking switch to one of United’s Premier League rivals.
