John Obi Mikel says Chelsea are missing Moises Caicedo, whose absence has contributed to defensive problems early in the EPL season

Chelsea legend John Obi Mikel has said the club are missing Moises Caicedo, with the Ecuadorian midfielder’s absence contributing to defensive problems during the opening weeks of the season.

Caicedo is currently recovering from a calf injury and has played only 14 minutes so far this season.

Chelsea have endured an uneven start, losing to Arsenal and drawing 2-2 at home against newly promoted Hull City.

The London club have shown considerable attacking threat, scoring 18 goals across their six matches in all competitions.

Their defensive record, however, has been less convincing, with 12 goals conceded.

Mikel believes Caicedo’s return could provide the balance Chelsea have been lacking.

“We are missing Moises Caicedo. When he returns, I believe we will become a much more solid team,” Mikel said on the Obi One Podcast.

The former Nigeria international highlighted Caicedo’s defensive awareness and ability to protect Chelsea’s back four.

“He is the player who disrupts the opposition’s play and ensures that our back four is adequately protected. Our back four is solid,” Mikel said.

Caicedo’s influence extends beyond his defensive work, according to Mikel. The Chelsea legend pointed to the midfielder’s energy, ball-winning ability and capacity to launch attacks as key elements of his contribution.

“The energy he brings, his ability to break up plays, initiate attacks and advance the ball is akin to what Declan Rice offers for Arsenal,” Mikel said.

“That’s the impact Moises Caicedo has for us, and his absence has been tremendously felt.”

Caicedo joined Chelsea from Brighton in 2023 in a major transfer and has since become an important part of the club’s midfield structure.

His ability to cover ground, win possession and provide protection in front of the defence has made him a significant figure in Chelsea’s tactical setup.

Mikel expects the midfielder’s return to make a noticeable difference.

“Once he is back, I am confident we will improve significantly as a team. There is no doubt about that,” he said.

Chelsea’s early-season results have therefore placed greater attention on the importance of midfield protection, particularly as the club seek greater consistency at both ends of the pitch.

For Mikel, Caicedo’s return could provide the stability Chelsea need to turn their strong attacking output into more dependable results.
