Chelsea shock defeat at Leeds sees Blues slip nine points behind Arsenal, halting their Premier League title challenge

Chelsea’s Premier League title ambitions suffered a significant setback as they lost 3-1 to struggling Leeds United at Elland Road on Wednesday.

Leeds’ Enzo Maresca side capitalised on Chelsea’s fatigue and poor first-half display to secure a surprise victory.

Jaka Bijol opened the scoring for the hosts in the sixth minute from Anton Stach’s corner, rising above Liam Delap to power a header past Robert Sanchez.

Leeds doubled their lead in the 43rd minute when Ao Tanaka unleashed a ferocious strike from outside the area that arrowed past the Chelsea goalkeeper.

Pedro Neto reduced the deficit after the interval, drilling in his fifth league goal of the season from a Jamie Gittens cross. However, Chelsea’s hopes were extinguished in the 72nd minute following a defensive lapse.

Malo Gusto’s pass was intercepted by Noah Okafor, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin tapped home into an empty net, sealing the win.

Chelsea’s defeat ended a run of seven games unbeaten and left them nine points adrift of league leaders Arsenal.

The Blues were without influential midfielder Moises Caicedo, suspended after a red card in Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Arsenal.

Manager Enzo Maresca rested Neto, Reece James, and Wesley Fofana, but Chelsea still appeared drained, struggling to match Leeds’ energy and tactical discipline.

Substitute Cole Palmer and Alejandro Garnacho came close to rescuing a point, but their efforts fizzled under the pressure of a well-organised Leeds defence.

The loss highlights Chelsea’s ongoing vulnerability without Caicedo, who has been a driving force in midfield.

Chelsea have now failed to win any Premier League away match when trailing by two or more goals at half-time.
