Dangote refinery expansion jobs expected to reach 95,000 as Aliko Dangote unveils plans to scale refinery capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day

President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has announced that the expansion of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery to a capacity of 1.4 million barrels per day will generate employment for about 95,000 skilled workers at peak construction.

The announcement was made on Saturday in Lagos during his induction as an honorary fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering, where he described the project as a defining moment in Nigeria’s industrial growth journey.

Aliko Dangote said the expansion reflects the group’s commitment to engineering excellence, large-scale job creation, and long-term economic transformation.

He noted that the refinery project would rely heavily on Nigerian engineers, technicians, and artisans, creating wide-ranging opportunities across multiple technical fields.

“At the peak of construction for this expansion, we expect to have about 95,000 skilled workers on site,” Dangote said, adding that the project would continue to expand employment opportunities as it progresses.

The expanded refinery, once completed, is expected to surpass India’s Jamnagar refinery to become the largest in the world, significantly boosting Nigeria’s refining capacity.

The industrial project is also projected to stimulate local manufacturing, enhance technology transfer, and strengthen Nigeria’s oil and gas value chain, according to the company.

A senior engineering official at the Nigerian Academy of Engineering described the recognition of Dangote as well-deserved, noting that his work continues to inspire innovation and ambition among young professionals.

The Academy President, Prof Rahamon Bello, said Dangote’s achievements go beyond infrastructure development, highlighting his influence in shaping a new generation of engineers and entrepreneurs.

The refinery expansion is expected to play a key role in improving fuel security, reducing import dependence, and saving foreign exchange for the Nigerian economy.

Dangote reaffirmed confidence in Nigeria’s capacity to deliver world-class industrial projects, describing the expansion as a step toward strengthening Africa’s industrial self-reliance.
