Daniel Saror Insecurity: Former Senator warns of worsening violence in northern Nigeria and calls for urgent government action

Prof Daniel Saror, former Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University Zaria and ex-Senator representing Benue North East, has issued a stark warning over escalating insecurity across northern Nigeria, citing failures in governance and rising militancy as major threats to national unity.

Speaking in an exclusive interview, Saror detailed the intensifying activities of armed Fulani herdsmen and jihadist groups in states including Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Borno, and Yobe.

He described the situation as unprecedented and warned that northern leadership had largely ignored the dangers posed by ethnicity-driven and religiously motivated violence.

“Government appears incapable or unwilling to protect lives and property. Northern Nigeria has become a source of national instability, and urgent intervention is required,” Saror said.

The former Senator also highlighted historical grievances, tracing violent tendencies to long-standing conflicts dating back to the era of Usman Dan Fodio.

He criticised the proliferation of arms to herdsmen while ordinary citizens remain unarmed, arguing this has exacerbated conflicts and created an environment of fear.

Saror reflected on his tenure in the Senate, where he played a key role in defeating former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s third term agenda.

He emphasised the importance of integrity in public office and the dangers of allowing personal ambition to override democratic principles.

In addition, Saror called for reforms in the National Assembly, highlighting the need for transparency in salaries and allowances, and for a credible system to transmit election results electronically.

He linked the lack of accountability to the persistent underdevelopment of rural areas and the diversion of local government funds.

“Credible elections and accountable governance are essential if Nigeria is to survive as a united nation. Without these reforms, insecurity and inequality will continue to erode public trust,” he said.

Saror concluded with advice on local political disputes, urging leaders in Benue State to prioritise reconciliation and sustainable development over partisan conflicts.
