EFCC Impersonation Conviction: Two men jailed in Kano for using fake EFCC IDs to defraud victims. Justice Saminu delivers sentence after guilty plea

EFCC Impersonation Conviction was handed down on Friday, July 25, 2025, as the Kano Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) secured a win in court.

Justice Nasiru Saminu of the Kano State High Court sentenced Buhari Abdullahi and Umar Mukhtar Usman to six months imprisonment or a N50,000 fine each, after the duo pleaded guilty to criminal impersonation.

They were arrested after presenting themselves as EFCC investigators, using a fake identity card to deceive unsuspecting victims.

Their arrest came during an attempted fraudulent act where they tried to exploit the EFCC’s name for personal gain.

According to the charge:

“You… falsely impersonated investigators of the EFCC… using a false identity card… and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 132 of the Penal Code Law.”

EFCC counsel Idris I. Haruna presented the case facts in court, urging for swift justice. The judge upheld the prosecution’s position, resulting in the EFCC impersonation conviction.
