England Quansah suspension confirmed as FIFA bans Jarrell Quansah for two World Cup matches after his red card against Mexico

England have suffered a major setback ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-final against Norway after defender Jarrell Quansah was handed a two-match suspension by FIFA.

The 23-year-old centre-back will miss England’s clash with Norway on Saturday, 11 July 2026, after being sent off during the second half of the Three Lions’ 3-2 victory over Mexico in the last 16.

Quansah received a direct red card for a challenge on Jesús Gallardo, with FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee later classifying the tackle as serious foul play. The decision resulted in an additional match being added to the usual one-game suspension.

The England Quansah suspension means the defender will also be unavailable for a potential semi-final encounter against either Argentina or Switzerland on 15 July if England progress to the last four.

The Football Association considered appealing the decision, particularly after FIFA overturned a one-match suspension handed to United States forward Folarin Balogun in a separate disciplinary case.

However, FIFA confirmed that Quansah’s punishment would stand, leaving England manager Gareth Southgate with a defensive selection challenge ahead of the Norway fixture.

In a statement released on Thursday, FIFA said: “The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has imposed the following sanction on England’s national team player Jarrell Quansah, who was sent off due to a direct red card during the FIFA World Cup 2026 match between Mexico and England held on July 5, 2026, at Mexico City Stadium: a two-match suspension for violating article 14 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.”

The governing body added that the suspension would apply to England’s upcoming World Cup matches in accordance with disciplinary regulations.

Quansah had featured prominently during England’s knockout-stage campaign, making his absence a significant concern as the team prepares to face a Norway side led by prolific striker Erling Haaland.

England reached the quarter-finals after overcoming Mexico in a dramatic 3-2 contest, while Norway advanced with strong attacking performances throughout the tournament.

With a place in the semi-finals at stake, Southgate will now have to find a defensive solution without one of his key options as England continue their pursuit of a first World Cup title since 1966.
