Trailing 2-0 with just over ten minutes of normal time remaining, England looked certain to crash out. Goals from Kosovare Asllani and Stina Blackstenius had put Sweden firmly in control by half-time, with Asllani’s opener marking her 50th international goal.

But England roared back. Lucy Bronze pulled one back before substitute Michelle Agyemang struck again moments later, drawing the sides level and sending the match into extra time.

Neither side could break the deadlock in extra time, sending the tie to penalties. In the shootout, Smilla Holmberg missed the decisive spot-kick for Sweden, firing over the bar. England held their nerve to seal a 3-2 shootout victory and continue their title defence.

“It was about belief,” said head coach Sarina Wiegman. “We kept fighting, and the players showed the heart of champions.”

The comeback means England will now face Italy in the semi-final in Geneva on Tuesday. Italy reached this stage of the tournament for the first time since 1997.
